How Academic Method came out of filmmaking, lecturing and academic leadership, and why the same question sits under all three: what earns a learner’s attention.

The story

The structure comes first.

Academic Method began with a simple observation: programmes are usually assembled from content outwards. Teams inherit modules, slides, platforms, and deadlines—then ask design to make the result coherent.

The Method reverses that order. It starts with the learner, the outcome, and the structure attention must move through. Content, assessment, technology, and production become parts of one designed experience.

That position comes from fifteen years designing across further education, higher education, professional development, and industry in the UK and internationally. Filmmaking, visual effects, graphics, web development, and marketing ran alongside the academic work. The practice brings them together through boards, maps, drafts, prototypes, and decisions.

The architect

An unusual route into the work.

Kevin Fenemore left school at fifteen with no qualifications. In his mid-twenties, after teaching himself how to learn, he entered university as a mature student and graduated into filmmaking. Lecturing followed, then fifteen years of designing courses, degrees, and learning systems.

He served as Senior Lecturer, Principal Lecturer, Course Leader, Programme Leader, Academic Director, and Dean in the UK and internationally. He designed degree programmes from brief to validation, led recruitment strategy, and built learning across film, creative technology, computing, professional practice, and industry. Filmmaking, visual effects, graphics, web development, and marketing remained part of the same working life.

He was later engaged as an academic consultant to design a new university in Brazil: six months on the degree portfolio and academic structure before the investors chose not to proceed.

Four validated undergraduate degree programmes designed from first principles, alongside hundreds of courses across FE, HE, CPD and industry.

Institutional leadership

In senior roles including Programme Leader, Principal Lecturer, and an international Dean of Faculty appointment, Kevin has built, validated and expanded academic portfolios across campus, online and industry education, in the UK and internationally.

Research into attention and learning joined to filmmaking, photography, digital product development, and the practical craft of getting ideas into the world.
