The Problem

You spend hours on content and minutes on how it reaches the brain.

Most educators treat slides, handouts, and video screens as containers for content. Something to pour information into. The visual layer gets handled last — if it gets handled at all.

The research says this is backwards. The way educational content is visually designed directly affects how it is processed, retained, and understood. Design isn’t the finishing touch. It’s the delivery mechanism.

Cognitive load is a zero-sum system. Every decorative element that adds extraneous load directly reduces the processing capacity available for actual learning.

Six Modules

From problem to methodology.

Each module builds on the previous one. The sequence follows elaboration theory: simple to complex, concrete to abstract, individual tools to integrated system. This order is not arbitrary — it reflects cognitive scaffolding.

The Case Against Decoration

Why every decorative element on your slides is costing your students learning. Introduces cognitive load theory, the coherence principle, and the Bauhaus connection: form follows function.

How the Brain Sees

Pre-attentive processing, Gestalt principles, and visual hierarchy as an instructional tool. Your brain makes layout judgements in under 250 milliseconds — learn to design for that window.

Font choice is a comprehension variable, not a style preference. X-height, contrast, spacing, line length — the variables that actually affect readability in educational contexts.
